Our vision for energy in London

Although London’s greenhouse gas emissions are falling, London is not yet on track to reduce its emissions quickly enough to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, or to meet national and international climate aims.

To ensure that London has the energy supply it needs in the future, and that the city does everything it can to limit its contribution to climate change, the Mayor wants to change the way London produces and consumes its energy.

The Mayor's vision for energy in London is clear:

London should become a zero carbon city by 2030, with energy efficient buildings, clean transport and clean energy.

Some the actions to achieve the Mayor's vision include:

  • making London's energy cleaner and more affordable
  • working to reduce energy demand in buildings
  • trialling innovative vehicle-to-grid technology with electric vehicles
  • speeding up the pace of cutting carbon emissions
  • cut fuel poverty by targeting energy efficiency to low income homes
  • providing funding to community energy projects.

Our London Environment Strategy, Solar Action Plan and Fuel Poverty Action Plan provide a clear outline of how we are going to address the most pressing energy challenges in London, to make it a greener and cleaner city for all Londoners.

You can find areas that we are actively tackling below and learn more about how we’re helping London’s homes, businesses and public buildings to use less energy and save money on their energy bills.

Our programmes

We have an ambitious target to cut carbon emissions in London by 60 per cent by 2025. The Mayor also aims for London to be a zero carbon city by 2030, with energy efficient buildings, clean transport and clean energy

This means that London’s homes and workplaces must be made zero carbon through better designed, more energy efficient buildings.

Find out more about the programmes that we are currently implementing across the capital, and the impact they are having on achieving our ambitious targets.

The Mayor of London’s Accelerator programmes will speed up the pace of cutting carbon emissions from buildings and London.
